Virginia Auto Insurance
Getting auto insurance should be the first thing you think about when getting a new car. By definition, accidents cannot be prevented and the only thing you can do is make sure that you will not have to pay for the costs of an accident from your own pocket, especially if you cannot afford it.
Virginia is a somewhat special state when it comes to auto insurance and if you are planning to get a Virginia auto insurance policy in the next few days, you should know exactly what your options are.

There are three basic ways in which you can drive your car legally on the roads of Virginia.
The first one is getting a simple Virginia auto insurance policy which can offer the minimum liability coverage required by the state. In the case of an accident, your policy should cover at least $25,000 for one person who was bodily injured or who died. If two or more persons have sustained bodily injuries or died in the accident, the policy needs to cover at least $50,000. If the accident has caused property damage of $20,000, you will need to be covered by your policy. Most people who decide to get insurance will settle for a simple policy which can satisfy these minimum requirements or maybe even more if they can afford it. However, you still have two options to choose from before you start searching for Virginia auto insurance quotes.
The second option is to get a self-insurance certificate from DMW or a Surety Bond, but you can only do this if you own a business vehicle and if you meet a few other requirements. Most people will not be eligible to be self-insured, but they will choose between the first and third option for driving a car legally in Virginia.
Your final option is to pay the Uninsured Motor Vehicle Fee, which is also known as the UMV. This $500 fee will allow you to drive your vehicle on Virginia roads, but without being covered for accidents at all. This means that it does not matter if you cause the accident or if someone crashes into you for no apparent reason, you will have to deal with the costs by yourself. The UMV fee will allow you to drive your vehicle for 12 months legally. This option is not that popular and most people only use it for a few days before they actually get a Virginia auto insurance policy which can really offer them protection.
In the end, if you live in Virginia and you need to get a new insurance policy for your vehicle, there are three options available. The first one is your normal policy which can protect you from most accidents, the second one is getting self-insurance if you have a business vehicle and the third one is paying a fee which will allow you to continue driving your vehicle without being covered. If you know where to look for the right Virginia auto insurance policy, the first option is the best one for you.
